Research
Kieron Brown’s main areas of research include comics studies, intermediality studies, and play studies. The working title of his dissertation is “Toward a Theory of Playfulness in Comics.” The project draws on theory from literary studies, comics studies, and play studies, conceptualizing playfulness as a disruptive attitude signaled by a player’s subversion of convention. The project approaches the topic at the levels of production, work, and reception and uses a range of unconventional print and digital comics (or comic-like objects) as case studies.
